Under the Shadow of His Wings: Finding Refuge in a Broken World

There are seasons in life when the storms feel relentless. When the wind howls, the rain beats down, and we wonder if we’ll make it through. Fear creeps in. Exhaustion takes over. And sometimes, we feel completely alone.

But we are not alone.

"He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you will find refuge." (Psalm 91:4)

This is the promise of God. Not that storms won’t come, but that when they do, He is our shelter.

A Shelter in the Storm

Have you ever watched a mother bird care for her young? When danger comes, she doesn’t fly away—she spreads her wings, pulling them close, shielding them from harm.

And that’s what God does for us.

He doesn’t abandon us in suffering. He draws us near.

The world tells us to be strong, to push through, to handle things on our own. But the truth is, we were never meant to carry our burdens alone. Under His wings, there is protection. Under His wings, there is peace.

And when life feels overwhelming, we don’t have to run from God—we can run to Him.

When the Battle is in Your Mind

Not all storms are external. Some rage within.

Anxiety whispers that things will never get better.

Depression says, You are alone.

Fear tells us, God isn’t listening.

But none of that is true.

Some battles don’t disappear, but His power is made perfect in weakness.

We often think if we just had enough faith, the struggle would end. But faith isn’t about escaping difficulty—it’s about trusting God in the midst of it. Even the strongest believers wrestle with fear, doubt, and despair. You are not less loved by God because you struggle.

Consider the apostle Paul. He prayed three times for God to remove his “thorn in the flesh,” but God didn’t take it away. Instead, He said,

"My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9)

God didn’t promise Paul an escape. He promised him endurance.

And that’s what He promises us, too.

If you’re in a dark season, hear this:

  • God sees you.

  • God has not abandoned you.

  • Your struggle does not define you.

Under His wings, you are safe.

Satan is a Lion, But He’s on a Leash

We can’t ignore the reality of spiritual warfare. The Bible describes Satan as a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

But here’s what we need to remember:

Satan is a lion—but he’s on a leash. (Job 1:12)

He’s a serpent—but his head is crushed. (Genesis 3:15)

Yes, the enemy attacks. He tempts, deceives, and accuses. He fills our minds with fear and our hearts with doubt. But his power is limited.

He cannot snatch us from God’s hand.

He cannot possess what is filled with the Holy Spirit.

He cannot stop the plans God has for us.

Satan is real, but he is not in control. God is.

So how do we fight back?

  • We resist him by standing firm in the truth. (James 4:7)

  • We take up the armor of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18)

  • We remember that the victory has already been won. (Colossians 2:15)

No matter how fierce the battle, we stand in Christ’s strength—not our own.

A Call to the Church: Be a Refuge

The church should be the safest place in the world for those who are hurting.

But too often, those struggling with mental illness, grief, or spiritual warfare suffer in silence. They fear judgment. They feel unseen.

That should never be the case.

"Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep." (Romans 12:15)

We are called to walk alongside the suffering, not look away. To be a refuge, just as God is a refuge for us.

What does that look like in real life?

  • Listening without trying to fix everything.

  • Offering grace instead of judgment.

  • Being present, even when words fail.

You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to show up.

Hope for Today, Hope for Tomorrow

One day, every storm will cease.

Every tear will be wiped away.

Every mind will be made whole.

Every wound will be healed.

That day is coming. But until then?

We trust.

We endure.

We take refuge under His wings.

So if you are weary today, if you feel like you can’t take another step, run to the One who shelters you.

Because under His wings, there is strength.

Under His wings, there is peace.

Under His wings, there is hope.

And you are safe in His arms.

Your Next Step

If this message resonates with you, take a moment to reflect:

  • What battle are you facing right now? Have you been trying to fight it alone, or have you sought shelter under His wings?

  • Who in your life needs a reminder that they are not alone? How can you be a refuge for them this week?

  • Have you surrendered to Jesus? True refuge begins when we put our trust in Him. If you’ve never given your life to Christ, now is the time.

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Rest is waiting.

Refuge is here.

Run to Him.
